Abstract
1,235,503. Finishing fabrics. Y. CHIBA. 27 Aug., 1968, No. 40830/68. Heading D1S. Spherically swollen headed terminal structures are formed on thermoplastic pile filaments of a base fabric to engage loops of another fabric in a separable fastening device by heating to melt the tips of the pile filaments whilst a liquid layer is present upon the surface of the base fabric. The fabric, Fig. 1, with a weft 1A and a warp 2A has a woven thermoplastic filament 3A, e.g. polypropylene, to form pile loops 3B the tops of which are cut open by a blade on the top of a loop-forming moulding-bar K to form pile filaments. In one embodiment, Fig. 7, the fabric 1 is passed through a viscous liquid 5A, e.g. water containing starch, in a tank 11 so that a liquid film is retained by surface tension between the pile filaments as the fabric passes over a heater M. The liquid film is gradually evaporated and only the parts projecting therefrom will be melted to form the structures, Fig. 4 (not shown). In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 8, the fabric 1 passes through a heating liquid 5B, e.g. at 70C-80C, and is slid over the top of a plate H so that the pile filaments 3C project out of the liquid by a predetermined length.
