Abstract

1,235,313. Coin sorting and validating device. VENDO CO. 7 Aug., 1968 [29 March, 1968], No. 37623/68. Heading G4V. A coin sorting and validating device comprises a vertical coin passage 76, Fig. 6, communicating with paths 44, 54, and a pivoted coin guide 64 mounted for movement between a normal position wherein non-magnetic coins are allowed to pass into the lower path 54 and an operative position (Fig. 7, not shown) blocking the passage and disposed to direct magnetic coins along the upper path 44, by means of a magnet 70 mounted on the guide which is attracted to a magnetic coin in the passage to shift the guide. A coin C inserted at 32 is tested for weight and diameter in a pivoted cradle 34, Fig. 1, before passing to the paths 44, 54. A coin directed along the path 44 passes around a magnetic end-piece 52 which imparts a particular trajectory to acceptable magnetic coins, defined between a separator member and an edge of the device to an accept track, while ferromagnetic slugs curl right round the end piece and misdirected non-magnetic coins rebound from an anvil past the opposite side of the separator member to a reject track. Coins allowed to enter the lower path 54 pass between a magnet 46 and a spaced magnetic disc whereby eddy-current coin braking is effected to impart to acceptable non-magnetic coins a trajectory to the accept track, while unacceptable coins are braked to a lesser or greater extent and either rebound from a second anvil or from the separating member, respectively, and pass to the reject track. Misdirected magnetic coins in the lower path 54 are arrested by the magnet 46 and are cleared by a conventional scavenging lever 92. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 10, 11, not shown), the coin paths (44a), (102) are disposed in a common vertical plane. A shoulder (108) is provided to guide non- magnetic coins into the lower coin path (102) and an additional magnet (104) associated therewith forms the non-magnetic-coin validating means. A further coin cradle (100) may be provided at the entrance to path (102), or the coin rail defining path (102) may be extended upwardly to guide non-magnetic coins into the lower path.
