A plate bonding, punching and registration mechanism comprising co-operating rollers 7 and 8, Fig. 2, is used in the preparation of a lithographic printing plate for use in a rotary offset printing press, especially for use on the plate cylinder disclosed in Specification 1,233,893. The upper roller 8 is felt covered and spring urged into contact with the lower roller 7 which comprises inner rotatable core 23 and outer rotatable barrel 17. The barrel 17 carries hole punching and locating devices 39, Fig. 1, associated with respective axially extending slots 21, 22 and operable by manual rotation of the core 23 by an arm 30. The barrel 17 also carries pins in holes 43 which intersect the slots 21, 22 and are used as lateral stops for registration purposes when printing plates are placed in the slots 21, 22. A spring-urged pin 33 is provided to hold the barrel 17 against rotation when necessary and the barrel with the core 23 is rotated by a handle 20. In use the printing plate blank is inserted in the slot 21 and the pin 33 is pushed against the barrel 17 and its mounting to lock it relative to the core 23. The core is then rotated whereby the devices 39 punch holes in the plate blank edge. The blank is then removed and imaged before being inserted into the slot 22 where it is held by the devices 39 engaging the newly cut holes. The pin 33 is released from the barrel 17 and the rollers 7, 8 are rotated by the handle 20 in order to bend the plate to the correct curvature for subsequent fitting to the plate cylinder of the rotary press.
