Abstract

1,234,292. Flameproofing textiles. PROBAN Ltd. 21 March, 1969 [29 March, 1968], No. 15279/68. Heading D1P. [Also in Division C2] Polyacrylic textiles are flameproofed by treatment with a mixture of a THP compound (i.e. a compound containing a tris (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium group) and an organic halogen compound selected from halogenated alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, amines, carboxylic acids, phenols, acid anhydrides, and esters of carboxylic acids and alcohols in which the alcohol moiety and/or acid moiety are halogenated; or with a compound derived from reaction of a THP precursor with an organic halogen compound selected from the foregoing list. The examples disclose the use of both mixtures of, and reaction products of, THP chloride and 2, 3 dibromopropanol; 2, 2 bis (3', 5'-dibromo-4'-hydroxyphenyl) propane; and tetrabromophthalic acid anhydride, in dimethylformamide as solvent. After treatment, the fabric may be cured with ammonia or another substance which will react with the methylol groups of the THP compound such as trimethylolmelamine or polyethyleneimine. Reference is also made to the flameproofing of polyacrylic/cellulosic textiles.
