Abstract

1,234,163. Sheet forming. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 4 March, 1969 [1 April, 1968], No. 11356/69. Heading B5A. Closed containers are made by drawing a first sheet into a first mould and a second sheet into a second mould, the sheets being peripherably sealed together prior to drawing either sheet or after one of the sheets has been drawn, and curing the container thus formed. In the particular embodiment, a container suitable for carrying a hydrocarbon such as petrol is made from sheet material comprising a rubbery polymeric base layer and a barrier layer of a hydrocarbon resistant material by first sucking a first sheet 1 into a first female mould 4 placing a second sheet 12 over the drawn first sheet so as to peripherably adhere to it, and finally sucking the second sheet into a second female mould placed over the first mould. The sheets may be initially softened by hot air and are finally cured in a hot air oven. During the shaping of the second sheet, air from the atmosphere enters between the two sheets through a tube 10 previously passed through the first sheet. In a second embodiment, the sheets are adhered together and then blown into the moulds, or in a third embodiment the first sheet is drawn as before and the second sheet applied to the second mould not by vacuum but by pressurized air introduced through tube 10. The sheets may be adhered together by heat sealing if the barrier layer is of suitable material, by a conventional adhesive, or by a strip of curable material interposed between the sheets.
