Abstract

1,234,134. Tobacco-smoke filters. MITSUBISHI RAYON CO. Ltd. 13 May, 1969 [15 May, 1968], No. 24385/69. Heading A2C. [Also in Division C3] Cigarette filters comprising at least one graft polymer of a vinyl or vinylidene monomer on polyvinyl alcohol or partially saponified polyvinyl acetate are made by dispersing the finely powdered graft polymer in a tow of crimped fibres, rolling the tow in a cigarette plug making machine and cutting the plug. In examples, the filters are produced using a) polyvinyl alcohol grafted with methyl methacrylate, acrylamide or a acrylamide/styrene mixture and cellulose diacetate fibres; b) polyvinyl alcohol grafted with methyl methacrylate and methacrylonitrile and blended with activated clay and polypropylene filaments and c) partiafly saponified polyvinyl acetate grafted with acrylamide and methyl methacrylate and polypropylene filaments. Safety harness. C. R. WEBER. 28 Feb., 1969 [1 March, 1968], No. 10887/69. Heading A3V. Retraction mechanism for a vehicle safety belt comprises a locking mechanism 6-13 effective to lock a spring loaded shaft 2 on which belt 3 is anchored and wound, Fig. 5 (not shown), a control wheel 14 for actuating the locking mechanism and a brake 23 which operates on the control wheel when the vehicle is abruptly accelerated in any of three mutually perpendicular directions, the locking mechanism also being actuated by an abrupt pull on the belt. A plate 2<SP>1</SP> integral with one end of shaft 2 has pivoted thereto at 7 a toothed pawl 6 to which a low inertia plastics pawl 9 is pivoted at 10. The rotatable control wheel 14 has a projection 16 which engages pawl 9 at 17. On abrupt rotation of shaft 2, the inertia of control wheel 14 moves pawl 9 against the force of a biasing spring 11 and into engagement with toothed ring 13 in housing 1; as shaft 2 rotates, pawl 9 drives pawl 6 into engagement with the toothed ring and when pawl 6 abuts stop 18 on the plate 2<SP>1</SP> the shaft is locked. The control wheel, which has a rubber rim 25, may be locked by an acceleration sensitive pendulum 20 actuating brake 23 through a lever 27 pivoted to the housing at 28. The pendulum is suspended from a counterweight 26 to eliminate the effects of static vehicle inclinations, and is sensitive only to horizontal accelerations. When the control wheel is so braked, shaft 2 is rapidly locked by any pull on the belt. The brake 23 is spring balanced, Fig. 3 (not shown), so that it also contacts the control wheel rim in response to vertical accelerations. The shape of the brake is such that it does not lock the control wheel when the belt is reeled in by coiled spring 5. The retraction mechanism is slidably mounted on a base G bolted to the vehicle, shaft 2 being parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle.
