Abstract

1,233,997. Fused abrasive grain. NORTON CO. 1 April, 1969 [10 April, 1968], No. 16992/69. Heading C4V. A method of producing fused abrasive grain, comprises forming a molten composition of the abrasive material and pouring while, close to its freezing temperature on to a mass of solidified lumps of a similar composition of size “ to 24 inches, the ratio of the mass of molten material to that of the lumps being between 0À35 and 2À0 and allowing the molten composition to freeze while mixed with the lumps. The abrasive may be alpha-alumina, a mixture of alpha-alumina and zirconia, zircon, zirconia, or bauxite, and may be mixed with other additives. The solidified mass may be comminuted by impact crushing. An abrasive grain obtained by the method comprises a mixture of alpha-alumina and zirconia, the amount of zirconia being 10-60% by weight, the grain having a numerical average crystal size of less than 50 microns.
