Abstract

1,233,705. Flying head mountings. SPERRY RAND Ltd. 16 Aug., 1968 [16 Aug., 1967], No. 37711/67. Heading G5R. A flying head 8 is universally pivoted 9 and biased 11 towards a rotatable record surface 12 and is engaged or released by a device 6 to move it away from or towards the surface. A single or multiple head 8 pivots about a needle 9 held by a spring 11 and extends through an aperture 16 in a spring lever 6 and through slot 15 in plate 1 which is adjustably screwed to a fixed support 5. The lever 6 is actuated electromechanically or pneumatically, e.g. when a record drum is not up to speed, to engage the head 8 and move it away from the surface, release of lever 6 allowing spring 11 to urge the head towards the surface without contacting the lever. A further spring 3 locates the head relative to datum surfaces A and B. A number of such multi-track head supports may be disposed around the drum to scan interlaced tracks.
