Abstract

123,352. Hecht, J. S., and Dowdell, A. T. Dec. 24, 1917. Piston packing.-A split piston-packing ring of rectangular or approximately rectangular crosssection for use in internal-combustion engines, steam-engines, pumps, or compressors &c. is formed with cuts A, Fig. 21, extending from the inner or the outer periphery, or from both. The cuts may terminate in drilled holes, as shown, and may be unevenly spaced, or of different depths. The cuts may also be either radial or tangential, and parallel to the axis of the ring or inclined to it. Two or more packing-rings Z', Z<2>, Fig. 14, may be arranged to break joint, and may be secured together by riveting or otherwise. The rings may be pressed axially by helical springs W or by a waved spring in a groove. In the form shown in Fig. 33, the cuts A, B, are made from edges of the ring, the bottom of the cuts being approximately parallel to a diagonal. One edge Z<7> of the ring may be bevelled or recessed. Two packing-rings Z<1>, Z<2>, Fig. 34, may be separated by a washer S, or a single packing- ring may be used in conjunction with one or two washers. The piston head may be of reduced diameter and grooved or recessed to admit fluid to the back of the packing, or may be formed with passages for this purpose, or the fluid passages may be formed in the piston ring.
