Abstract
1,233,401. Printed circuits. ELECTRO CONNECTIVE SYSTEMS Inc. 6 June, 1968 [29 June, 1967], No. 27041/68. Heading H1R. In a method of producing a printed circuit from a metal foil clad laminate by a photo-etch process, the foil is coated with a light-sensitive etchant resistant material, the material is printed with a desired circuit pattern exposed to light and the light exposed or unexposed portions of the etchant resistant material removed by developing thereby leaving only the circuit pattern coated with etchant resistant material. In a first example, a copper foil bonded to a polyamide-polyimide film, glass, ceramic, ureaformaldehyde and melamineformaldehyde condensation products, fluorocarbons, cellulose acetates or nylon insulating backing is fed into a dark room where a lightsensitive material in the form of a film forming liquid is applied. The liquid sets on drying and is such as to become soluble in a developer when exposed to light, whereas unexposed film is not soluble. After drying the coated film is passed through a rotary printer where the desired circuit pattern is printed with a pigmented printing ink on the light-sensitive coating. The coated and printed foil then passes out of the dark room past a light source where the unprinted areas of the light-sensitive material are exposed. These exposed portions are chemically changed by the light and are removed by passing the foil through a bath of developer such as a weak alkaline solution. The foil is then etched to remove the foil not covered by the etchant resistant material and printing ink. Finally, the printing ink and light-sensitive coating are removed by passing through appropriate solvents. Alternatively, the light-sensitive material may be removed by exposure to light and developing. In a second example, the ink is printed on those portions of the resist coating overlying the portions of foil to be subsequently removed. After exposure to light the ink is removed and the photo-resist is then developed which removes those portions not exposed to light.
