Abstract

1,232,691. Mixed organotin halides. ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd. 25 April, 1969 [25 April, 1968], No. 19763/68. Heading C2J. Unsymmetrical organotin halides of the general formula R a R<SP>1</SP>SnX 3-a wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are different substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon groups, a is 1 or 2 and X is a halogen, are made by heating a mixture of organotin halides of the formulµ R a+1 SnX 3-a and R<SP>1</SP> a+1 SnX 3-a respectively, at 50-250‹ C. in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst (e.g. AlCl 3 ). When a is 1 the two reactants are used in equimolar proportions to produce a diorganotin dihalide and when a is 2 the two reactants are used in molar proportions 2 : 1 to produce a triorganotin halide. The reactants may be formed in situ by the reaction of RMgX with SnX 4 , which produces SnR 4 +R 3 SnX which is reacted, in the presence of 1/3 molar proportion of SnX 4 (based on the SnR 4 ), with another halide R<SP>1</SP> 3 SnX, under the same conditions. The second reactant R<SP>1</SP> 3 SnX may be produced in situ in the same manner. In a modification, R 4 Sn is reacted with R<SP>1</SP> 2 SnX 2 where R<SP>1</SP> and R are different, under the same conditions as above to produce dihalides of the formula RR<SP>1</SP>SnX 2 where R<SP>1</SP>, R and X are as defined above.
