Abstract
1,232,254. Glass to metal seals. KELSEY INDUSTRIES Ltd. 2 Sept., 1969 [5 Sept., 1968], No. 42367/68. Heading C1M. [Also in Divisions C3 and H1] A seal is formed between a sheet of non- polarizable material, e.g. glass, and a peripheral area defining an aperture for said sheet in a body of a polarizable material, e.g. an automobile vehicle, by interposing a deformable sealing strip having a surface tackiness comprising a synthetic rubber and a plasticizer therefor and having uniformly dispersed therein finely divided iron oxide, subjecting the seal area to an electromagnetic field generated by an induction apparatus so as to heat at least the iron oxide in the strip, and terminating the electromagnetic field after a time sufficient to at least initiate curing of the strip, whereby the sheet becomes sealably joined to the peripheral area. If desired, the sheet and the aperture can be treated with a primer, e.g. an aminosilane. By suitable choice of rubber and curing agents, the treatment can cure the rubber to any desired degree.
