Abstract
1,230,978. Extruding foamed thermoplastics. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 15 Nov., 1968 [8 Dec., 1967], No. 55948/67. Heading B5A. A die, intended for use in the extrusion of foamed thermoplastics, comprises a number of orifices, the orifices being formed by the superposition of two or more cross-shaped orifices, the points of intersection of the crosses being coincident, or by two or more crosses joined by extensions of aligned arms of the crosses, or by two or more crosses joined by a slit orifice. As shown, orifices 2 are formed by the superposition of crosses 3, 4, the arms of the latter being about a quarter of the length of the former. In the embodiments of Figs. 2 and 3 (not reproduced), crosses are joined by the extension of aligned arms, in the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not reproduced), by slit orifices (11) and in the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not reproduced), both extensions and slit orifices are provided. The orifices may be on a curve or on a circle to produce a tube. Several thermoplastics are mentioned including polyethylene, polypropylene and as a preferred material, polystyrene. Foaming agents are specified, 3-30% by weight of the thermoplastics being a suitable amount thereof. The temperature of the die normally lies between 90‹ and 180‹ C.
