Abstract

1,230,851. Magnetic recording &c. apparatus. MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 26 April, 1968 [8 May, 1967; 11 May, 1967], No. 20043/68. Heading G5R. A magnetic head 6 is mounted 5 for sliding movement on a pair of parallel rods 3, 4 and is fed relative to a rotatable record 1 by a feedscrew 9 co-operating with a threaded portion 8 of a clutch member 7 pivotable on one of the rods, a first spring 10 biasing the clutch into engagement with the feedscrew and a second spring 11 biasing the head support 5 towards the start position and into engagement with the clutch member such that when a solenoid 14 is energized to raise a bar 12 the clutch is disengaged and the head returned to the initial position. The solenoid 14 is energized by the head support 5 at the end of its travel via switch 13 to return the head to the start where a flange 16 operates a switch 15 connected with a switch 17 in an AND gate so as to de-energize the solenoid when the threads of the screw 9 and clutch portion 8 are registered. Drive continues until the switch 15 is released, whereupon the feedscrew stops with the head in the initial position proper. The bar 12 may be raised manually or by the solenoid 14 at any time. The feedscrew may be driven continuously or intermittently and the record may be a disc or drum. To reduce noise as the head is shifted to change between circular tracks on a disc, the ratio of the intertrack spacing to the track width is selected to lie between 1/3 and 1/2.
