Abstract
1,230,645. Photo-electric testing, NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. May 9, 1969 [April 25, 1968], No. 19741/68. Heading G1A. [Also in Division G2] An apparatus for the estimation of the potential fertility of semen includes a cell having two substantially parallel surfaces at least a part of each of which is transparent for holding a specimen of semen, one of the surfaces being adapted for rotary motion in a plane parallel to the other whereby the specimen is placed under a shear stress, a source of light passing a beam through the transparent portions, and a detector for the light passing through the cell. The cell is maintained at a predetermined temperature, rotated with the specimen until a steady reading is displayed on a cathode ray tube, the rotation is stopped, and the time for the spermatozoa to re-establish a wave motion which is indicated by a decrease in the received light is measured. In a modification of the cell, the lower plate is surrounded by a trough. A potentiometer recorder may be used or the oscilloscope trace may be photographed. A clock may be started by opening the motor switch.
