Abstract

1,229,425. Germicidal sutures. L. D. KURTZ. 15 March, 1968 [23 June, 1967], No. 12686/68. Heading A5E. A method of imparting germicidal properties to a suture comprises swelling the suture with a first solution containing first high molecular weight ions and then with a second solution containing second high molecular weight ions of opposite charge, at least one of the ions being germicidal, whereby an insoluble precipitate is formed in the body of the suture. In a modification the suture may be pre-swelled before contacting with the solution of ions. Optionally when a non-germicidal ion is used, it may have pharmacological activity. Specified active ions are those deriving from benzethonium chloride, benzalkonium chloride, lauryl dimethylbenzylammonium chloride, cetyl dimethylbenzylammonium chloride, lauryl pyridinium halide, bacitracin, polymyxins, tyrothricin, viomycin, vancomycin, neomycin, erythromycin, streptomycin, carbomycin, nystatin, kanamycin, puromycin cycloserine, tetracycline, aureomycin, oxytetracyclin, subtilin, anisomycin, penicillin, fumagillin and heparin. The suture may be made of materials selected from silk, cellulose, cellulose esters, polyamides, polyacrylics, polyesters, polyolefins, polyvinyls and cotton.
