Abstract
1,229,244. Deflecting propulsive jets. MOTOREN - UND TURBINEN - UNIONMUNCHEN G.m.b.H. 30 May, 1968 [7 July, 1967], No. 26063/68. Heading B7G. [Also in Division F1] The invention relates to a by-pass type gasturbine jet engine which comprises an LP compressor 1, HP compressor 2, combustion equipment 3, HP turbine 4 which drives the HP compressor through shaft 7, and LP turbine 5 which drives the LP compressor through shaft 6. The engine comprises also two pairs of swivelling nozzles 11, 14, the pair of nozzles 11 being connected to receive by-pass air taken from the LP compressor to chamber 9, means indicated by the flame-holder device 16 being provided to burn fuel in the by-pass air in chamber 9; the pair of nozzles 14 is connected to receive exhaust gases discharging from the turbine 5. The engine comprises at least one fixed jet pipe 17 having a downwardly directed thrust nozzle 18, the area of which may be varied in operation and may be completely closed. The fixed jet pipe 17 is arranged to receive by-pass air from the chamber 9, the by-pass air possibly having fuel burned therein. In the embodiment, two downwardly directed fixed jet pipes and nozzles 17, 18 are provided. In Fig. 4 a further fixed jet pipe 19 having a rearwardly-directed propulsion nozzle 20 of variable area is provided, the jet pipe being connected to receive by-pass air (in which fuel may have been burned) from the chamber 9. A valve means (22) is provided to close off the jet pipe 19 if desired. Combustion gases from the main combustion equipment 3 may be discharged through the downwardly-directed jet pipes 17, also through the rearwardlydirected jet pipe 19. Further downwardlydirected jet pipe and nozzle assemblies may be provided to receive gases from the main combustion equipment 3.
