A system as disclosed in Specification 1, 222,051, wherein an electrical data transmission system is provided for a plurality of laboratory analytical instruments, is modified by the instrument access units being connected to a common path of the data highway by respective status leads which are marked when an instrument associated with a particular access unit requires service by the computer. Each access unit has as AND-gate which is opened only when it is receiving its combination of address code signals to pass a marking signal on its status lead to the common path.
