Abstract

An electrical data transmission system comprises a plurality of laboratory analytical instruments, connected or connectable to a computer by a multi-path data highway means, through a plurality of time-sharing access units connected, or connectable, to the highway at respective locations. As shown, a chromatograph assembly 1 comprises a temperature-controlled oven 2, containing a chromatograph column and detector, an autoinject unit 3 with supply unit 4, an amplifier unit 6 and a recorder unit 7. The chromatograph assembly is connected by plug-and-socket to an access unit 8 which is in turn plugged into data highways 19-21 and a status lead 18. Access units 9, 10 are shown plugged into data highways having status leads 17, 16 respectively. The status leads 16-18 are connected to an interface 12 of a computer 11 and carry address and interrogation signals. The data highway 19 is used to transmit digital information from the computer via an interface 13 to the access units, and digital information is returned on highway 10 to the computer via an interface 14. Analogue signals are transmitted from the amplifier units of the chromatograph assemblies to the computer on data highway 21 interface 15. Each access unit includes a set of switches by which the number of a desired programme of analysis is selected, and a record set of switches which is set up with the reference number of the sample. The computer recurrently scans the status leads to detect whether a chromatograph assembly requires service. The computer services a chromatograph assembly by feeding a combination of address code signals on to data highway 19, the access unit responding by transmitting digital programme and sample reference number signals on line 20. The computer then transmits, if available, the digital control signals for the selected programme. Response digital signals from the chromatograph assembly are transmitted over highway 20 and subsequently, analogue data representative of the analysis is transmitted over highway 21. The programme results are printed out on a teleprinter device 22.
