Abstract

1,229,000. Brake-operating mechanism. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 21 Aug., 1969 [13 Sept., 1968], No. 43803/69. Heading F2E. A brake servo assembly for use in a motor vehicle, comprises a push-rod 14 intended for connection to a brake pedal 10 and connected to a movable element of a brake servo 12 intended to be mounted forwardly of the pedal, to transmit movement of the pedal to the movable element to actuate the brake servo, and a casing 16 for the rod 14 and which is intended to be connected to a fixed portion of the vehicle, e.g. the dash panel 20, so as to be stressed in tension by reaction forces resulting from brake servo actuation, the push-rod including a weakened portion and the casing being constructed to be weaker in compression than in tension to enable the push-rod and casing to collapse in response to a compressive force arising from abnormal load on the brake servo housing. As shown, the rod 14 is of twopart telescopic construction able to transmit normal braking forces and the housing is also of telescopic construction and includes a spacer of 32 of polyamide material; a bracket 34 carries a return stop 36 aligned with the pushrod. In modifications, the casing comprises (a) two overlapping tubular parts held together for the transmission of tension forces and having an interposed annular rubber vibration damping member, (b) a blank rolled to tubular form and having two lines of diamond-shaped apertures and (c) a one-piece part of open U-shaped cross-section having a central internal stiffener, the rod 14 having an offset central portion to facilitate buckling of the rod under abnormal compression forces.
