Abstract

1,228,634. Dyeing hair. L'OREAL. 7 Aug., 1968 [8 Aug., 1967; 4 Dec., 1967], No. 37645/ 68. Heading D1B. Keratinic fibres especially hair are dyed by applying together or in either order (a) a tetrazolium compound of formula I: in which R and R<SP>2</SP> are unsubstituted or substituted aromatic radicals R being divalent, R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, heterocyclic or optionally substituted aromatic radical or a group of formula -N=N-Ar in which Ar is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic radical, n is 1 or 2, Y is hydrogen when n is 1 and a group of formula II R, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> being as above, when n is 2, A- is an anion (b) a reducing agent capable of converting the tetrazolium compound to a coloured formazan. Reducing agents include ascorbic acid and its salts, hydrazine, a dithionic acid or salt, reductanes, borohydrides, thiols, ammoniacal hydrogen peroxide and thioglycollic acid. Preferably the dye composition contains 0.1 to 10% by weight of the tetrazolium compound which may be applied in an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solution as a cream, gel or aerosol at pH greater than 7.
