Abstract
1,228,525. Recovery of uranium scrap. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 8 April, 1969 [4 April, 1968], No. 17781/69. Heading C1A. A process for recovering uranium values from uranium scrap containing impurities which form volatile fluorides having a lower boiling point than uranium hexafluoride such as the fluorides of boron, silicon and carbon is characterized in that the uranium scrap containing uranium oxides and the impurities is reacted with elemental fluorine at a temperature ranging from 300‹ to 500‹ C., preferably in a fluidized bed comprising granules of alumina and uranium bearing fuel having a particle size of -20 to 174 mesh (U.S.S.), so as to form a product containing uranium hexafluoride and volatile fluorides of said impurities, any solids are removed from said gaseous fluoride product, and the gaseous product is then cooled to a temperature below the boiling point of uranium hexafluoride and above the boiling point of the volatile impurities so as to obtain purified liquid uranium hexafluoride. Preferably the selective condensation of UF 6 occurs at a temperature in the range - 54‹ to 0‹ C.
