Abstract

1,227,603. Photographic materials for printing plates. POLYCHROME CORP. Feb.14, 1969 [Feb.29, 1968], No.9926/68. Heading G2C. A photo-sensitive material for use in producing lithographic plates comprises a support with at least a hydrophilic surface coated with a lightsensitive layer which on exposure and processing produces a positive-working plate and overcoated with a layer which is (a) a silver halide emulsion capable of being processed to give a positive silver image, (b) an image-receiving layer containing development nuclei or (c) a layer containing a photo-sensitive or photo-conductive compound which after exposure may be physically developed in the presence of a silver salt to yield a direct positive image. Specified positive-working light-sensitive layers are naphtho- or benzo-quinone diazide sulphonic or carboxylic acid amides or esters, as a condensation product of a phenol-formaldehyde resin with a naphthaquinone diazide as in Specification 1, 227, 602, a diazo resin treated with potassium ferrocyanide as in Specification 947, 760, a novolak resin and a diazonium salt as in Specification 944, 884 and a novolak resin with a diazonium reineckate salt as in Specification 1,080,153. Specified silver halide emulsions are prefogged emulsions as in Specifications 873, 937 and 875, 887, emulsions which are developed by the photosolubilization process aa in Specifications 1, 031, 901-3 or emulsions which produce internal images as in Specification 645, 877. Alternatively, layers containing photo-sensitive or photoconductive compounds which on exposure and development produce silver images e.g. as in Specifications 1, 064, 095 and 1, 076, 777-9 may be used. In the examples, a grained aluminium support is coated with a naphthaquinone diazide resin layer and overcoated with a high contrast silver halide emulsion. This is image-wise exposed to produce a latent silver image which is developed and bleached in an acidic potassiumdichromate bath. The material is now fogged by exposure to light and the latent image developed to give a reversal positive silver image. The material is now exposed to ultra-violet light and the silver image layer and exposed areas of the diazide resin layer removed with an alkaline buffer solution to have a positive working lithographic plate. A layer of novolak resin may be applied between the diazide resin layer and the emulsion.
