[Also in Divisions C3 and C5] A catalyst composition for the olefine reaction is formed by admixture of (a) a complex of [(L) a (Y) b M c Z d ] x wherein M is Fe, Ru, OS, CO, Rh or Ir; Z is halogen, CN, SCN OCN or S n Cl 3 or an organic acid radical of up to 30 carbon atoms; (Y) is NO or (#-CHR<SP>4</SP>- CR<SP>4</SP>-CH 2 -); (L) is R 3 )Q, R 2 Q-QR 2 , R 2 NR', CO, R 2 N-R<SP>2</SP>-NR 2 , optionally R<SP>5</SP> substituted pyridine or 2, 2'bipyridines, optionally R substituted #-cyclopentadienyls, R<SP>3</SP>S, R-S-R, R<SP>5</SP>(CN) y , R<SP>5</SP>(COO-) y , 1-5-cyclooctadiene, dicyclopentadiene or norbornadiene a is 0 at 1-6, b is 1 or 2, y is 1 or 2, c is 1, 2 or 3, d is 1 - 6, x is indicative of polymeric state of complex; the sum of a+b+c+d is not greater than the number required for a metal to achieve the closed shell electronic configuration of the next highest At.No inert gas; when M is Ru or Os b is 0, 1 or 2; when M is Fe (Y) is NO only and b is 2; Q is P, As or Sb; R is alkoxy or halo optionally substituted aromatic or saturated aliphatic of up to 20 carbon atoms; R<SP>1</SP> is H or R; R<SP>2</SP> is divalent R; R<SP>3</SP> is divalent saturated or ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic from 4 to 10 carbon atoms; R<SP>4</SP> is H or Me; R<SP>5</SP> is an aromatic, saturated or ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic of up to 30 carbon atoms; and (b) an Al compound selected from (i) one or more ReAlX f (ii) AlX 3 and (iii) a mixture of (i) or (ii) with R<SP>1</SP> g M<SP>1</SP>X h , where R<SP>1</SP> is H or R, M<SP>1</SP> is a metal of group IA, IIA, IIB or IIIA, e is 1-3, A is 0-2 and e+f is 3, g is 1-3, h is 0-2 and g+h equals the valency of M<SP>1</SP>. The catalysts may be used in the vapour phase supported on a carrier such as Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , B 2 O 3 zeolites, ion exchange resins or polymers.
