Lean asphalt (i.e. with less than 6% by weight of bitumen derived from petroleum, coal tar or coal tar pitch) is laid under water by a pipe having a diameter of at least 30cm (preferably 40cm) filled with hot lean asphalt is moved horizontally. The pipe may have at its outlet an external flange extending radially by 0.3 to one times the pipe diameter. The pipe may be tapered, the diameter increasing in the direction of flow by between 0.5% and 2% of the length, and may be vibrated. Examples of lean asphalts and their rates of being laid are given.
