Abstract
1,227,137. Reinforced hoses. BTR INDUSTRIES Ltd. 31 May, 1968 [2 June, 1967], No. 25702/67. Heading F2P. In a hose having an inner layer 10 and an outer surrounding layer 12 and at least one reinforcement layer 11, or layers, between the two layers the reinforcement comprises some strands at least the surfaces of which are brass having a composition within the limits of 80 parts copper to 20 parts zinc and 60 parts copper to 40 parts zinc which brass adheres to the outer layer 12, and other strands of which at least the surfaces are of a metal which does not adhere to the outer layer. Preferably the outer layer 12 is of a natural, or synthetic sulphur containing rubber and the reinforcement layer 11 comprises strands of high tensile steel wires, some of which have a brass coating. The inner layer 10 may be a self supporting synthetic rubber tube and may itself be a reinforced tube. The ratio of adhering to non-adhering strands can vary from 11: 1 to 1: 11. The non-adhering wires may be high tensile steel which is uncoated or coated with bronze, nickel, cadmium, chromium or copper or they may be galvanized. Alternatively they may be stainless steel wires and have a coating of brass outside the above limits. The outer layer 12 may be an oil and ozone resistant synthetic polymeric material or a natural rubber and preferably contains 0À1% of sulphur. As shown, the reinforcement layer 11 is of braided high tensile steel wire which contains copper coated wires to the ratio of 7: 2 or 5: 1 to brass coated wires. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the hose comprises a synthetic rubber inner tube (20) surrounded in turn by a high tensile steel wire (21), a synthetic rubber layer (22), a second layer (23) of braided high tensile steel wire having copper coated to brass coated wires in the ratio of 6: 2 and a cover (24) which contains sulphur and adheres only to the brass coated wires. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the hose comprises successively from an inner rubber tube (30), a nylon protective sheath (31), a rubber interply layer (32), a ply of spirally wound high tensile steel wires (33), a rubber interply friction layer (34), a second ply of spirally wound wire (35) wound in opposite sense to the layer (33), a second interply rubber layer 36, a layer (37), of braided high tensile steel wires having a ratio of copper to brass coated wires of 6: 1, and a cover (38) of neoprene containing sulphur. In another embodiment an inner neoprene rubber tube (40) is covered by a nylon protective layer (41) which is surrounded by four plies (42) of high tensile steel wire separated by three rubber interply layers (43). The plies (42) are wound alternately in opposite, directions and the ratio of copper to brass coated wires in each is 4: 1. The outermost cover (44) of neoprene contains sulphur.
