Abstract

1,226,989. Packaging. L. D. SCHREIBER CHEESE CO. Inc. 7 Oct., 1968, No. 47437/68. Heading B8C. A method of producing individually wrapped flat packets of cheese comprises advancing a web of wrapping material 18 and forming a tube therefrom by passing the web through a former 23 and heat - sealing the overlapped edges using a sealing unit 36 to provide a peelable longitudinal seal, advancing the formed tube over a flattened nozzle 40 and extruding hot cheese by means of a pump 12 continuously into the tube, transversely squeezing and sealing the filled tube at spaced intervals to form a chain of discrete packets. The filled tube, which is partially flattened by the tapered nozzle form is advanced and squeezed at spaced intervals by endless belts 48 carrying co-operating cleats 52. The tube is then passed through a crimping mechanism 46 while the cheese is still viscous to transversely seal the packets, these seals being effected by leaving a film of cheese at the seal area. The crimping members may be corrugated to form a corrugated seal. The chain of discrete packets is passed through a cooling bath 64, airblast and vacuum drying units 72, 74, and timing belts 76 to cut-off apparatus 78, which comprises wheels 82, 84 and separates the individual packets. The packets are finally moved by a conveyer belt to a stacking mechanism (not shown) and to an over wrap machine (not shown) to form a package of the stacked packets. Alternatively, a preselected number of interconnected packets may be cut from the chain and folded in accordion fashion or rolled for use in an automatic dispenser. The web may be regenerated cellulose film coated with polyvinylidene chloride.
