Abstract

1,226,843. Glass fibre - reinforced polyurethanes. UNILAN A.G. 4 April, 1968 [4 April, 1967], No. 16268/68. Heading C3R. Glass fibre reinforced thermoplastically processable polyurethane elastomers are prepared by reacting together in one-stage an essentially linear polycaprolactone having free terminal OH groups and a M.W. of 1000 to 3000, a glycol having a M.W. below 500 and a diisocyanate and, while the reaction mixture is still liquid, embedding a fleece of unorientated staple glass fibres in the mixture in such a way that the fibres are uniformly distributed in the mixture. The glycol is preferably 1,4-butane diol or one of the formula wherein n is 1 to 12 and R is a phenylene or naphthylene ring, especially hydroquinone diethylene glycol ether. Preferred diisocyanates are dipbenylmethane -4,4<SP>1</SP> -diisocyanate or hexamethylene diisocyanate. The glass fibre is suitably present in amounts of 5 to 20% based on the weight of polyurethane elastomer and may be embedded in the polyurethane by casting the liquid reaction mixture on to a heated metal sheet on to which the glass fibre has previously been laid or by continuously passing the glass fibre on to a conveyer on which it is uniformly impregnated with the liquid reaction mixture and the solidified melt containing the glass fibre is continuously removed from the belt. The final product may be granulated and processed on conventional thermoplastic processing machines.
