Abstract

1,226,570. Locating a fluid Interface electrically. POST OFFICE. April 24, 1969 [April 22, 1968], No. 18919/68. Heading G1N. [Also in Division G4] The level of liquefied gas in a container is determined by the cooling effect on a heated semiconductor diode, as indicated by its temperature and resistance. The diode D1 Fig. 3 is fed with current from source B1, B2 maintained constant by transistors TR1, TR2 at a value adjustable by resistor R1 sufficient to raise its temperature, and the volts drop across the diode is sensed by a meter M in series with a Zener diode Z. The sensing diode D1 is located at the end of a dipstick Fig, 4 (not shown) which is inserted into the vessel containing liquefied gas. When diode D1 is submerged in the liquid its temperature falls, the resistance rises and the volts drop across it also rises to a value sufficient to fire the Zener diode Z and meter M indicates a large increase in current. The volts drop across the diode may alternatively be maintained constant and the change in current noted. In another embodiment the frequency or RMS value of an A. C. component of the volts drop across the diode is measured, this component only being present when the diode is in liquid. The dipstick may carry a number of test diodes spaced longitudinally, whose resistances are sensed in turn to determine which pair are located on either side of the liquid/gas interface.
