A printer for marking processing data on the backs of printed photographs comprises a plurality of sliding-rod type bars 26 ... 37 each operable by a respective electromagnet 38 ... 49, the type bars and electromagnets being mounted on a slide 14 displaceable between two positions, in each of which positions impression of selected type bars is effected. The type bars are arranged in three rows of four type bars, each row having three type bars bearing the Roman numerals 1, 11, and 1111 respectively. The fourth type bar carries a minus sign in two rows 26 ... 29 and 30 ... 33 and a Roman numeral V in the third row 34 ... 37. The type bars are selected by push button switches (Fig. 5, not shown). With the slide 14 in a first position, a cam (99, Fig. 5) driven by a paper transport motor (not shown) operates a switch (100) to energize a relay (101) and connects a charged capacitor across the electromagnets selected for operation in the first position of the slide. A motor 56 is then operated to rotate a shaft 59 so that the slide 14 is shifted to its second position through an eccentric 60, lever 63a, 63b, link 65 and lever 66, the second position being displaced from the first by a distance equal to half the separation of the rows of type bars. A cam 61 then operates a switch 107 to energize the relay (101) again, and operate the electromagnets selected for the second position of the slide, through a second charged capacitor. Impression is effected for the additional printing matter by a hammer 83 operated by an electromagnet 77.
