Mattress sewing apparatus comprises a base frame 1 supporting an endless frame encircling track 6, a carriage 7 mounted on and guided by said track for movement around a table and a sewing machine 9 mounted on the carriage to perform a mattress edge sewing operation along an endless sewing path having opposite side and opposite end portions, the table having a sectional top 11 for supporting a mattress during the sewing operation and having a main section 12 and a relatively movable auxiliary section 16 which respectively provide one and the other of the opposite side edges and together provide the opposite end edges, the sections being mounted for adjustment relatively to each other to vary the width of the table top to accommodate mattresses of different widths, and relatively to the base frame for sewing alignment purposes. The two sections comprise the main rectangular portion bonded by members 12N, 12E, 12S x 12W, and the adjustable portion 16 which is generally 'T'-shaped and comprises the members 16N, 16E, 16S and a cross-member 16W which corresponds to a long edge of the mattress. The adjustable portion is slidably connected to the main portion by rollers (25, Fig. 5, not shown) which engage in channel section (22) below the main portion 12. A bar 37 carried in portion 16 is provided with notches (36, Fig. 4, not shown), 37, 38 which respectively co-operate with a latch bar 30 on the main portion when the auxiliary portion 16 is in the position shown for sewing a regular size mattress, or opened out to accommodate a queen or a king size mattress respectively. Plates on the main portion pass between the nip of rollers (46, 46a, Fig. 5). Carried on the base frame 1 to allow the movement of the table relatively to the frame. A solenoid operated lever co-operates with a notch 54, 55 or 56 on a table member 53 in the positions appropriate to each of the mattress sizes. Toothed strips beneath the members 44 of the table are engaged by pinion on a common shaft to prevent necking of the frame. Operation. To sew a normal or 'full' sized mattress the member 16 is closed against the section 12, the mattress placed on the table, and the machine drive clutch 8 engaged, the carriage 7 moving fully around the track 6 to complete the sewing. If a 'queen' or a 'king' size mattress is to be sewn the member 16 is pulled out to an appropriate position defined by notch 37 or 38 to support the mattress. Sewing is then started, the carriage moving partly around the track to sew along the sides corresponding to side 12N, side 12E (fully) and 12S. The machine is then stopped and carriage 7 connected to the table by apparatus 66, 67. The solenoid is energised and the table is then moved rightwards relatively to the base, as seen in Fig. 1, to an appropriate position defined by notch 55 or 56, the carriage moving with the table and mattress. The carriage is disengaged from the table and sewing along the remainder of side 12S, side 12W and the remainder of side 12N.
