Abstract
1,225,858. Motor vehicles. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 3 July, 1969 [19 Sept., 1968], No. 44583/68. Heading B7H. The engine 12, clutch 14 and gear mechanism 16 are resiliently pivotally mounted as at 18 transversely of the body of a vehicle and are rigidly coupled to a drive-shaft 24 the opposite end of which is fixedly secured to the input shaft of a differential unit 34. The shaft 24 is of a sufficiently large diameter to resist bending such that any movement of the rear axle unit causes the assembly to pivot as a whole about the pivots 18. The back axle unit may comprise a rigid live axle supported by helical springs 44 at each end to the body of the vehicle. A Panhard rod may locate the axle in a lateral sense. Alternatively independent rear wheel suspension may be employed and a De Dion tube may be used to support the rear wheels and to which the coil springs are attached to support the back axle on the body of the vehicle, Fig. 4, not shown.
