Abstract

1,225,596. Granulating metals. W. SCHUSTER and H. WINTER. Nov. 4, 1969, No.54026/69. Heading C7X. Method and apparatus of granulating metal comprises immersing one end of a tube below the surface of a molten metal bath, the other end of the tube above the bath forming a perforated hollow cylinder with a closed end and rotating the tube so that the metal is ejected from the perforations. The ratio of internal diameter d 1 to outer diameter d 2 of the cylinder i.e. d 1 /d 2 > 0À33 and d 3 internal diameter of tube is< d 1 . Ratio d1/d2- is preferably > 0À66 and d 3 preferably between 0À2 and 0À5 d 1 . Fig. 1 shows the perforated cylinder a) connected to the tube c) immersed in melt, by a conical section b) to form sprayer 23 which is rotated at 600-900 rpm to produce granules 0À1- 3mm. and at 7000-18000 rpm for granules smaller than 0À3mm. Argon is fed into the cylinder a) via shaft 1 and the metal is ejected from perforations 6 into an argon atmosphere or a vacuum. A reservoir of molten metal may be connected to the molten metal bath Fig. 2 (not shown) and in a further embodiment Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) a stream of argon may be introduced above the melt surface to help force the melt into the perforated cylinder. The perforated cylinder may be a net or sieve e.g. op N6 alloy for Cu melts, stainless steel for Al melts or Ni for P6 melts. Alternatively the tube and cylinder may be iron or steel, graphite or ceramic with drilled perforations. Metals sprayed may be alkali metals, Al, Mg, Fe, Cu, P6, Sn.
