Abstract
1,225,534. Four-component α-olefin coordination catalyst. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 11 Oct., 1968, No. 48439/68. Heading C3P. Alpha-olefins are polymerized in the presence of (a) a vanadium compound, (b) an organoaluminium compound, (c) a halogencontaining oxidant, (d) a diluent, and (e) a hydrocarbon-soluble activator which is more reactive during the polymerization with the organoaluminium compound than is the oxidant, and which is (1) isoprenyl aluminium, (2) a trialkyl aluminium, (3) a Lewis base which satisfies a specified test and is an ether, ketone, amide or amine, or (4) a compound of formula where A is acetylacetonate, -OR 7 , -NR<SP>4</SP>R<SP>7</SP>, or -NR<SP>9</SP> where R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>, R<SP>6</SP> and R<SP>7</SP> are C 1-8 alkyl, R<SP>9</SP> is C 4 or C 5 alkylene, and the components are used in specified ranges, components (b), (c) and (e) being different from one another. A very wide variety of oxidants are specified including CBr 4 , N-bromopyridinium tribromide, bromoacetyl bromide, a very large number of compounds containing the -CCl 3 or -CCl 2 grouping particularly benzotrichlorides, CCl 2 = CCl - CCl 2 - CCl 2 - CCl = CCl 2 , C 6 H 5 H g CX 3 , perchlorinated dihydrothiophen, and CCl 2 = CCl.CCl 2 Br. In examples, ethylene, propylene and, optionally, 1,4 - hexadiene are copolymerized in the presence of (a) VOCl 3 , VCl 4 or vanadium acetylacetonate, (b) (i-Bu) 2 - AICI, Et 2 AlCl, Et 3 Al 2 Cl 3 , or iBuAlCl 2 , (c) benzotrichloride, o-Cl-, p-CCl 3 -benzotrichloride, C 3 Cl 5 H, C 3 H 6 , benzal chloride or Cl 3 C.SO 2 Cl, and (e) Et 2 AlOEt, Et 3 Al, and aniline.
