In a method of determining the size distribution of fine particles in a particle-suspending lighttransmitting fluid the particles are allowed to settle through a beam of light passing through the fluid and both the transmitted light and scattered light falling on a detector, is compared with the output from a light reference detector on to which a second beam from the same source is directed through an adjustable aperture. The apparatus comprises a sedimentation tank 13, Fig. 1, with a stirrer 14 in a light proof enclosure 15. Stop 7 causes the beam to diverge over a wide angle on to detector 10.
