Abstract

1,225,271. Door closing mechanism; shaft construction. DOR-O-MATIC (G.B.) Ltd. 31 Jan., 1969 [1 Feb., 1968], No. 5202/68. Heading E2M. [Also in Division F2] An end portion 16 of a shaft 12, projecting from a door closing mechanism of the kind having means for controlling the closing and latching rates of the door, and being sunk in the floor or door frame, is provided with at least one pair of opposed flats whereby a lever arm, for connection to the door and having an aperture of complementary shape for receiving the end portion 16, can be non- rotatably mounted on the shaft 12, the end portion 16 being slotted and having a screw 22 inserted in an axially extending screwthreaded hole to spread the outer extremity of the shaft sufficient to secure the lever arm. The end portion 16 and the aperture in the lever arm are preferably of substantially square cross-section, as shown, and the end portion 16 is preferably slotted by a pair of diagonal slots 18 so that the end portion 16 is constituted by a cluster of four deformable triangular members 20. At the axis of the shaft 12 is a screwthreaded countersunk hole into which is inserted a countersunk head screw 22 whcih spreads the members 20 very slightly to hold the lever arm firmly. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) a grub screw acts against a steel ball resting in the bottom of the hole, the ball exerting a bursting force when the screw is tightened; or the screwthread in the hole may be tapered. The end 16 of the shaft may also be of polygonal cross-section.
