[Also in Division A5] The invention comprises compounds of the formula where R is alkyl of 2 or 3 carbon atoms. The compounds are prepared by reacting longifolene with paraformaldehyde and the appropriate acid. The compounds may be hydrolysed to #-hydroxymethyl longifolene
