When starting an internal-combustion engine, on sites where there is a danger of explosion, the exhaust pipe system is cleaned internally for the removal of combustible or explosive gases by a scavenging medium. A control valve coupled to an engine starting device is disposed in a scavenging medium pipe leading to the exhaust pipe system.
