Abstract

1,224,877. Brightening clay. ENGLISH CLAYS LOVERING POCHIN & CO. Ltd. 29 May, 1968 [31 May, 1967], No. 25191/67. Heading C1A. [Also in Division B2] A process for brightening clay comprises subjecting the clay feedstock to froth flotation, followed by attrition grinding of the purified clay. Two procedures are given for froth flotation: (1) An aqueous slurry containing 35 to 50% wt. of crude clay is conditioned by agitating the slurry for a time sufficient to dissipate 20 horsepower hours of energy per ton of clay within the slurry. During or before conditioning there is mixed in the slurry, (a) a deflocculant (e.g. sodium silicate 1.0 to 12.0 lbs. per ton of clay), (b) an alkali to raise the pH of the slurry to above pH 7 (e.g. NH 4 OH, 1.0 to 12.0 lbs. per ton of clay), (c) a collector for mineral impurities (e.g. oleic acid 1.5 to 7.5 lbs. per ton of clay), and (d) an activator (e.g. lead acetate on calcium chloride). After dilution of the slurry to 15 to 30% wt. solid content, the slurry is subjected to froth flotation in a vessel having a central internal impeller. The frothing agent used is pine oil or an alkyl ether of polypropylene glycol. (2) An aqueous slurry containing 35 to 50% wt. of crude clay is mixed with a mineral acid to bring the pH of the slurry to below 4, a cationic collector (e.g. aliphatic C 8 -C 20 amine, acetate or hydrochloride at 0.2 to 2.0 lbs. per ton of clay) and a frothing agent of the type used in procedure (1) in approximately the same concentration as the cationic collector. The product clay is attrition ground to dissipate therein at least 100 horsepower hours of energy per ton. Reference has been directed, by the Comptroller to Specification 1,103,585.
