Abstract

An aqueous shampoo composition comprises (a) 10-30% by weight of a watersoluble alkylethenoxy sulphate detergent containing an average of 1-3 ethenoxy groups, (b) 2-15% by weight of an alkylolamide or amine oxide viscosity and foam control agent, (c) 0-8% by weight of a monohydric or dihydric alcohol containing 2-6 carbon atoms and (d) 0À4-1% of an added inorganic electrolyte which is a chloride, sulphate, phosphate or mixture thereof, the amounts of ingredients (a), (b), (e) and (d) being proportioned within the specified ranges to give a shampoo which is clear at normal room temperature and which has a consistency ranging from a viscous pourable liquid to a gel. Ingredient (a) may be prepared by condensing C 10 -C 18 alcohols with ethylene oxide, esterifying the product with sulphuric acid and forming the alkali metal salt of the ester, the preferred detergent being sodium lauryl ether sulphate prepared from commercial lauryl alcohol. Ingredient (b) may be chosen from mono- or di-ethanolamides of C 10 -C 18 fatty acids (preferably lauric-myristic diethanolamide), C 10 -C 18 alkyl dimethyl amine oxides (preferably lauryl dimethyl amine oxide) and morpholine oxides (preferably coco-morpholine oxide). The alcohol (c) may be ethanol, propylene glycol or hexylene glycol, while the inorganic electrolyte (d) may be sodium chloride, potassium chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium sulphate or sodium phosphate. Additional ingredients which may be present in the shampoo composition are water-soluble protein-desired polypeptides (especially those derived from collagen) ultraviolet light absorbers (e.g. 2,4<SP>1</SP>- dihydroxybenzophenone), preservatives to inhibit mould and bacterial growth in the shampoo (e.g. formaldehyde), pH control agents (e.g. hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric, tartaric or citric acid), colours and perfumes. The water used in preparing the shampoo composition is preferably deionized.
