[Also in Divisions B2, C2 and D1] Polymers comprising recurring units of the formula useful as impregnating and coating agents, are obtained by polymerizing acrylates or methacrylates of the formula wherein each R 1 radical is independently a fluorine or chlorine atom or a C 1-9 alkyl group, which is optionally substituted by fluorine, chlorine or bromine, or two R 1 radicals form a C 1-18 alkylene radical, which is optionally substituted by chlorine, bromine or fluorine; A is a radical -CFR 3 -R 4 R 5 -, R 3 and R 4 being independently hydrogen or fluorine atoms and R 5 being a hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom; C and D are each independently ethylene radicals or certain substituted ethylene radicals provided that L is joined to a methylene group; m is from 0 to 75; n is from 0 to 75; v is 0 or 1; and L is a OCOC(M)=CH 2 group, M being a hydrogen atom or a methyl group. The polymerization may be effected by solution, bulk, emulsion or suspension polymerization and in the presence of free-radical generating catalysts, e.g. peroxides, chain-transfer agents, cross-linking agents, water-soluble organic solvents and/or inorganic salts. Co-monomers may also be used, e.g. vinyl esters, vinyl halides, vinyl alkyl ketones, vinyl alkyl sulphones, vinyl ethers, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, aliphatic and aromatic olefins, other acrylic compounds, and other unsaturated acid esters. Numerous examples are given, The alcohol is used in an example as solvent for the solution polymerization of the methacrylate monomer (CF 3 ) 2 CF-O-CF 2 CF 2 -CH 2 CH 2 -OCO-C(CH 3 )=CH 2 in the presence of α,α<SP>1</SP>- azobisisobutyronitrile.
