Abstract

1,224,650. Automatic control of rolling. SCHLOEMANN A. G. June 14, 1968 [June 20, 1967], No. 28335/68. Heading G3R. The difference between a desired and actual cross-section, computed from thickness and width, of metal issuing from the first roll stand of a mill, causes automatic adjustment of the rolls of that stand to eliminate the error. In Fig. 3, metal W is reduced in section by rolls 1. The velocity of entry of the metal is measured by a transducer 20 e. g. responsive to light radiated from the metal, and the roll gap is measured by a transducer 27 operated by roll gap adjuster 24. From these two signals a computer 21 produces a signal representative of the cross-section of the metal supplied to the rolls assuming a constant flow of material. This signal is compared at 22 with a signal representative of the desired input cross-section produced by a computer 33 from signals representing desired input velocity and roll gap. Any difference is applied through a converter 23 to operate roll gap adjuster 24 and thereby eliminate the error. Under the control of a pulse generator 14 driven by the rolls, the signal representing roll gap is periodically stored at 28 for periods equal to that required for the measured portions of the material to reach a width gauge 25. A computer 29 then produces from the width and stored gap measurements signals representative of cross-sectional areas of the metal leaving the rolls which are compared with a signal representative of a desired cross-section so that any differences are effective to vary the desired value of input velocity at 32 to maintain output cross-section constant.
