Abstract

1,224,356. Covering cores by winding. AMERICAN AIR FILTER CO. Inc. 19 March, 1968 [5 April, 1967], No. 13357/68. Heading B8G. Filamentous mats are formed by feeding a curtain 3 of filaments on to a rotating drum 1 from which the mat can subsequently be removed by cutting and selectively inserting filament collector means 8 into the curtain of forwarding filaments so that a portion of the filaments contact the surface of the collector means to be urged into contiguous relation to form multifilament strands to be wound on the drum. As shown, glass filaments are fed from feeder 2 which reciprocates along the drum. The collector means, e.g. cylinders 8 or wheels (32), see Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), are suspended on a support from the feeder 2 and are preferably rotated about an eccentric axis by motor 9, see also Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown). The collector cylinders 8 may have conical or hemispherical ends to assist in penetration of the filament curtain. The collector cylinders 8 may have different diameters. A collector rod 11 may be disposed so as to contact at least a portion of the filament curtain and thus narrow the depth thereof in a direction normal to its width, see Figs. 3 and 11 (not shown). The collector rod may form part of the collector means when the wheels (32) mounted on the rod form the collector means. The collector rod may be rotatably driven, e.g. by motor 13.
