Abstract
1,224,348. Programmed control of testing. CARL SCHENCK MASCHINENFABRIK G.m.b.H. July 25, 1968, No.35536/68. Heading G3N. An arrangement for testing a specimen in accordance with a predetermined test programme comprises a loading device, a load measuring transducer and a means for adjusting the loading device in dependence on a comparison between an actual load value derived from the transducer and a desired value derived from a programme circuit receiving predetermined test instructions comprising an ultimate desired load and the rate of change of load to achieve that load. As shown a test member 1 is clamped between a plunger 6 of a cylinder 5 and a holder 2 incorporating a load detector 3 connected to amplifiers 8, 25. The output of amplifier 8; which is proportional to the force applied to the member, is fed to an input of a differential amplifier 10 the other input of which is fed with a compensated desired value on a line 20. The output of the differential amplifier controls a servovalve 7 controlling the flow to the cylinder 5. A punched tape, containing digital values, representative of desired peak values of force and the rate at which this force is attained, is read by a scanning device 12 and the desired peak value fed to a potentiometer 14 the output of which is applied to an input of a differential amplifier 16 where it is compared with the actual value of the load from the amplifier 25 or, by operation of a switch 22, with the compensated input to the differential amplifier 10. The output potential of amplifier 16 is fed to a Schmitt trigger 17 the output from which is fed through a potentiometer 18 to an integrating device 19 providing the compensated desired value. The time constant of the integration of the compensated desired value is controlled by an adjusting device 29, responsive to data read from the tape, and sets the potentiometer 18, of the integrator 19, or the Schmitt trigger 17. It is stated that the switch 22 can be connected to the output of amplifier 8; amplifier 25 being no longer needed. In an alternative embodiment, Fig.2 (not shown) facilities are provided for a sinusiodal loading pattern the frequency and peak values of which are maintained constant for a specified number of load alternations.
