Abstract

1,224,344. Polymerizing vinyl chloride. INDUSTRIE - FORSCHUNGSZENTRUM CHEMIEANLAGEN. 1 July, 1968, No. 31248/68. Heading C3P. [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] Vinyl chloride or a monomer mixture containing a major proportion of vinyl chloride is polymerized in apparatus comprising a horizontal stationary autoclave which is provided with an inlet valve and with an outlet valve, which is equipped with a stirring shaft provided with stirring discs inclined thereto, and which contains freely mobile grinding elements adapted to be moved by the discs, the shaft rotating intermittently during a first part of the polymerization and preferably with substantially constant torque during a second part of the polymerization. The ends of the autoclave may be interconnected by a pipe in order to provide recirculation of monomer/polymer during, for example, at least the initial stages of polymerization; the pipe may be provided with valves to enable it to be emptied of polymer by means of, for example, vinyl chloride monomer. In an example, vinyl chloride is polymerized at 50‹ C. under a nitrogen atmosphere in an autoclave containing, as grinding elements, wooden balls having a diameter of 40 mm., the shaft and discs rotating intermittently at a fast rate of rotation during the first part of the polymerization and continuously at a slow rate of rotation during the second part of the polymerization.
