Abstract

122,431. Berry, F. E. Oct. 30, 1917. Phase, changing; polyphase transformers.-A transformer for changing three-phase to four-phase current has a transformer A, B, C for each of the three phases, the primaries a, b being of the same size and the primary c smaller. Two secondary windings are used with each of the primaries a, band one secondary with the primary c. One of the ends of each of the four secondaries on the transformers A, B is connected to the remaining secondary as shown, the four-phase current being taken from the remaining ends of the four secondaries, the mid point 6 of the secondary on the transformer C being the neutral point. As applied to an electric furnace, the point 6 is connected to a hearth electrode, but with balanced loads between the phases no current will flow in the hearth electrode. In an arrangement for converting three-phase to two-phase, the secondary of the transformer C is also divided into two, the four ends being connected to four of the ends of the secondaries on the transformers A, B. The remaining ends of the latter secondaries furnish the two-phase supply. The transformers may be used for converting two or four-phase current into three-phase. Instead of three single-phase transformers, a three-phase transformer may be used.
