Abstract

1,224,094. Polyamide composition; polymer compositions. DART INDUSTRIES Inc. 14 Aug., 1969 [16 Aug., 1968], No. 40771/69. Headings C3P and C3R. [Also in Division C5] A composition comprises (a) nylon and (b) an ionic copolymer. It does not contain any polyolefin. By wt. based on (a) + (b) there is 50- 95% (a) and 5-50% (b). (a) May be nylon 6, 6/6, 6/10, 11, 7, 8, 9, or 12. (b) May be a copolymer of (c) an α-olefin and (d) a comonomer being an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carbboxylic acid or anhydride or dicarboxylic acids 5-100% of the acid groups in (b) being neutralized with metal ions (e). (b) May contain from 50% to 80% mole (c), and 0À2-25% mole (d). (b) May be as described in Specification 1,011,981, having high MW and melt index 0À1-1000 g./10 min. Olefin (c) may be RCH=CH 2 , where R is H or C 1 -C 8 , alkyl. Comonomer (d) may contain 3-8 C atoms. Ions (e) may be Na<SP>+</SP>, K<SP>+</SP>, Li<SP>+</SP>, Cs<SP>+</SP>, Ag<SP>+</SP>, Cu<SP>+</SP>, Be<SP>2+</SP>, Mg<SP>2+</SP>, Ca<SP>2+</SP>, Sr<SP>2+</SP>,<SP>+</SP>Ba<SP>2+</SP>, Cu<SP>2+</SP>, Cd<SP>2+</SP> Hg<SP>2+</SP>, Sn<SP>2+</SP>,Pb<SP>2+</SP>, Fe<SP>2+</SP>, Co<SP>2+</SP>, Ni<SP>2+</SP>, Zn<SP>2+</SP>,Al<SP>3+</SP>, Sc<SP>3+</SP>, Fe<SP>3+</SP>, or Y<SP>3+</SP>. Also present may be, based on wt. of (a), 5-60% glass fibre or 5-50% asbestos, and 5-30% lubricating agent, e.g. MoS 2 or P.T.F.E. The components may be mixed by melt blending; or a dry mixture of all the components may be melted and injectionmoulded or extruded. The effect of adding (b) to (a) is to increase the impact strength from e.g. 0À9 ft.-lb./in. for nylon to e.g. 3À5 ft.-lb./in. for the composition.
