Abstract

1,224,060. Lubricant additive. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 28 May, 1969 [30 May, 1968], No. 26025/68. Heading C5F. A lubricant additive composition comprises (1) a major proportion of a neutral organophosphate or phosphite in which at least one of the organo-substituents is an ester, (2) a minor proportion of a monohydrogen di-hydrocarbyl phosphate or phosphite and (3) a minor proportion of an oil-soluble polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid. The additive composition may comprise 85-95% by wt. of (1), 0À5-7% of (2) and 4À5-7% of (3). The polymeric acid preferably has an acid value of 170-210 and 20-50 carbon atoms. A lubricant may comprise 0À5-10% by wt. of the additive and a mineral, fatty or ester base oil. In an example, to a base oil comprising an ester of pentaerythritol and dipentaerythritol with C 5 -C 9 monobasic acids, was added 1% dibutyl (trimethylolpropane caproate) phosphate (1), 0À05% dibutyl hydrogen phosphate (2) and 0À05% dilinoleic acid (3). Optional ingredients are phanothiazine, and diphenylamine as antioxidant, benzotriazole or sebacic acid as corrostion inhibitors and a silicone antifoaming agent. The lubricants are particularly suitable for gasturbines.
