Abstract

1,224,007. Air electrode. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 19 July, 1968 [30 Aug., 1967], No. 34603/68. Heading HlB. An air or oxygen electrode comprises a synthetic resin binder and as the only catalyst electronically conductive catalytically active carbon particles distributed through and held together by the binder, said carbon particles having been derived from carbonaceous material which has been activated by a hot gas activation method, said synthetic resin being either hydrophobic or hydrophilic, with the proviso that in the last-mentioned eventuality, a hydrophobic material must be present as an impregnant. In a particular embodiment, Fig. 4, the binder, e.g. polyvinylene fluoride, is dissolved in a solvent, e.g. dimethyl acetamide and then mixed with the carbon particles. This mixture 28, is brushed on to a nickel screen 24 and the solvent allowed to evaporate. The resin may then be cured. The nickel screen is U-shaped, passing round the edge of the cell and supporting a second electrode on its other face. Separator 19 is also U-shaped passing round the bottom of the anode 14. The anode may be of Zn or Mg and may have a bail (Fig. 2, not shown) to facilitate its removal from the cell. The electrolyte may be NaC or KoH.
