Abstract

1,223,674. Bitumen cauldrons. E. H. PRIEST and G. M. PRIEST. 28 Feb., 1968 [7 Feb., 1967], No. 5734/67. Heading E1G. [Also in Divisions F4 and H5] Solids, e.g. pitch, bitumen, resin, waxes or greases, are melted on a heated screen which includes members of generally triangular crosssection. As shown, the solid 1 is placed on a screen formed by an upper set of parallel tubes 2 which extend between inlet and outlet headers 9, 10 for a heating medium. The melted solid flows over further tube 3 and is collected in a heated container 6 having an agitator 7. The tubes are of triangular crosssection and are staggered as shown in Fig. 4. Melt from the container may be pumped through further tubes located inside tubes 2 for further heating (Fig. 5, not shown). The outer tubes may be of the cross-section shown in Fig. 7 and may be internally and/or externally finned; the inner tubes may be similarly finned. In a further embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown) the melt is initially collected in an auxiliary heated container from which it overspills into container 6, a pump being provided for recirculating melt from the main to the auxiliary container. The screen may be electrically heated.
